In Gran Canaria you can relax on the beach in winter, while the rest of Europe freezes.

Summer weather all year round! Gran Canaria is the third biggest Canary Island after Tenerife and Fuerteventura. And it is one of the most popular destinations in Europe. Besides beautiful, golden sandy beaches, there is also a lot of nature to discover. For active people there are many mountain bike routes and many possibilities for hiking. In small villages you will definitely find a nice souvenir for your family and friends!

Arrival

The Gran Canaria airport there are direct flights from many European destinations. You should book a rental car Rental car before your trip starts.

Hotel

In Gran Canaria there are many cheap hotels, especially in the tourist hotspot Maspalomas. However, we recommend you a vacation home, for example in Salobre in the south of the island Villa Lagos* is the perfect accommodation for two to four people. Here you will be woken up by the sun in the morning, during the day you can relax in the pool while enjoying the beautiful view of the golf course.

Places of interest

First stop in Gran Canaria is Maspalomas. The dunes between Playa del Inglés and the lighthouse are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The desert with golden sand is about 6 kilometers long. The dunes are up to 20 meters high. It looks really cool - not only on the photos! The place is also good for those who like to take a sunbath without clothes: The area is a nudist area.

The beach is divided into several sections. There is also a gay beach, where mostly members of the LGBT community hang out. In general, we can say that Gran Canaria is a very LGBT-friendly island. Here you can find many leisure activities and a vibrant nightlife with many gay bars and discos, most of them are in „Yumbo-Center“.

At the lighthouse there is a modern beach promenade with many bars and restaurants where you can eat typical Spanish specialties. We recommend paella with chicken and seafood, as well as Canarian potatoes with the typical (and spicy!) mojo sauce. After dinner, treat yourself to a café barraquito with Licor 43 and sweetened condensed milk.

The village Puerto de Mogan, also in the south of the island, is called "the little Venice". Here you will find many colorful houses, flowery streets, as well as numerous water canals with picturesque bridges. The comparison with the Italian metropolis is quite reasonable! Our video presents it.

For a day trip, you should definitely go to Roque Nublo (Spanish for "Cloud Rock"). High above the clouds, the 90 meter high monolith will definitely impress you. The rock is the landmark of Gran Canaria. Around it you will find a lunar landscape, where you feel like in an alien world. By the way, from here you also have an amazing view of the island Tenerife. Great photos and videos are guaranteed at this point! Pico de las Nieves (Spanish for "Peak of the snow") nearby is ideal for a hike. Here you can also admire the extraordinary flora of Gran Canaria.

Nearby is Tejeda, one of the most beautiful villages in Spain. In springtime, Tejeda turns into a sea of colors. The village is also famous for its almonds. You should not miss a visit to theDulceria, one of the most famous pastry shops in Gran Canaria. The bestseller here is Bienmesabea delicious cream made of almonds, sugar and cinnamon.

Show the world that you are in Gran Canaria.

Las Palmas is the capital of the island and is located in the north. Be aware: The north of the island is often much colder than the south, and it rains more often here. In Las Palmas you can experience more than 500 years of history in the narrow streets of the old Vegueta quarter . There are a lot of well preserved buildings from the 15th century to admire. For example, you should visit Columbus Museum (Casa de Colón) and Santa Ana Cathedral . From the top you have a great view of the whole city. After your discovery tour you can relax at Playa de las Canterasand watch the surfers.

Botanische Gärten sind langweilig? Nicht auf Gran Canaria 🙂

Also in the north and interesting for plant lovers is the Jardin Canario. The botanical garden is a real paradise with its huge collection of different plants. Here you can take a relaxing walk. The entrance is free. A few kilometers away you will be fascinated by the Crater of Bandama . With its depth of 200 meters and a diameter of more than 1,000 meters, the volcanic crater has remained almost unchanged until today. There are several trails where you can walk around the crater or descend into its heart. Take enough water and sunscreen with you, because the sun can be pretty hot here!

Other beautiful places in Gran Canaria are the romantic village Firgas with a small waterfall in the old town, and Teror with its colorful houses. In this village in the heart of the island there is a beautiful church from the 18th century.
