At least since the film "In Bruges" flickered across the screens, the capital of West Flanders has become a tourist hotspot. Nevertheless, the picturesque old town with its famous canals, historic buildings and colourful markets is still fascinating and at the latest when Bruges shines in the evening in atmospheric light, you will also be captivated by the fairytale backdrop.
Already in 2000, UNESCO declared the medieval city centre of Bruges a World Heritage Site. The central square in the old town is easy to find, because here the Bruges Belfry towers over 80 metres into the sky. Every day the city bell ringer rings the 47 bells in the top of the tower. If you climb the 366 steps of the bell tower, you will be rewarded with a fantastic view. At the same time you can also visit the cloth hall and take a look into the treasure chamber.
The market is surrounded by the magnificently restored guild houses and the Provincial Palace with its roof spires and turrets. It is home to the Historium Bruges, an adventure museum that takes you through the medieval history of the city.
The Stadhuis (town hall) with its impressive facade dominates the castle square. Highlight of the pompous interior is the Gothic Hall with beautiful wall paintings and a neat vault. Next door stands the oldest church in Bruges. The Basilica of the Holy Blood consists of two churches, namely the Blasius Chapel and the upper church built on top of it, which is magnificent. We recommend a canal cruise, which is a unit price per half hour, regardless of the landing stage, and which takes you along all the important places, including the Bonifaciusbrug, the Bridge of Love, and the Rozenhoedkaai (Rosary Quay), which is known as a film set.
