Hanover is not only a trade fair city, but also perfect for a short trip.

Colourful, artistic and surrounded by natural oases – this is how we would describe Hanover in a nutshell. The city surprised us with its red thread, green ring, blue poles and colourful nanas. We also found out that the city is great for shopping.

The World in 5 Minutes – Schönes Deutschland | Book 1

This is our Book for the video. It is the perfect addition for Hanover and other popular cities in Germany.

Arrival

From Hanover airport you can reach the Hanover Main Station with the S-Bahn line S5 in 30 minutes.

Hotel

We recommend Loccumer Hof*. This 4-stars hotel is located only a few minutes' walk from Hanover main station and the pedestrian zone. A luxurious alternative would be Concorde Hotel am Leineschloss* in the south of the Old Town.

Places of interest

A four-kilometer long circular route through the centre of Hanover is marked by the red thread on the pavement and connects over 30 sights. The central square is the Kröpcke in the middle of the pedestrian zone. The Kröpcke clock is a popular meeting place and is one of the city's landmarks. The square is crossed by the shopping miles Georgstraße and the two-storey Bahnhofstraße, with the Niki-de-Saint-Phalle-Promenade on the lower level. After extensive shopping, you can also enjoy good food around the square.

The Brauhaus Ernst August serves German dishes with freshly brewed beer. Under a cross vault from 1880, Jack the Ripper’s London Tavern serves traditional British food with ale and whiskey.

The old town is characterised by beautiful half-timbered houses and winding alleys with small cafés and shops. Opposite the Old Town Hall is the market hall, where you can buy fresh food and enjoy a delicious meal. Our highlight is the Bushbar with African snacks, wines and beers. On both banks of the river Leine the traditional Old Town Flea Market takes place every Saturday and in the evening you have a fantastic view of the illuminated quarter from the rooftop bar Schöne Aussichten 360° Beachclub Hannover .

The French-Swiss artist Niki de Saint Phalle is the only femaly honorary citizen of Hanover so far. Three of her voluminous female figures stand on the Leibniz bank, where the colourful Nanas have become a landmark. More than 400 of her works are exhibited in Sprengel Museum, an important museum for modern and contemporary art on the north shore of the Maschsee.

A short walk into the Maschpark leads you to a pond in which the magnificent New Town Hall with its towering dome is reflected. The world's only arched elevator takes you up to the viewing platform at an angle of 17 degrees, from which you can look down to the Harz mountains on a clear day. A little bit outside of the city, there is the vegetarian restaurant Hiller. It is the oldest vegetarian restaurant in Germany and serves exclusively vegan food. Try the all-you-can-eat buffet and finally a Lüttje Lage, the national drink of Hanover.

The Herrenhausen Gardens are among the most important gardens in Europe. Highlights in the Großen Garten are the grotto and illuminations of the water fountains in summer. In the Berggarten there are four plant show houses and one of the largest orchid collections in the world. Georgengarten and Welfengarten are freely accessible. Here you will find the Leibniz Temple in honour of the scholar Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz and in the Georgenpalais the German Museum for Caricature and Drawing in honour of Wilhelm Busch with a selection of his works. Monbrillant Palace in the Welfengarten is today the University of Hanover.

You can explore the charming landscape around the city centre by bike. Along the rivers Leine and Ihme you will find kilometers of cycle paths. The Green Ring denotes an 80-kilometer circular route and is marked with blue-washed objects such as fence posts and stones along the way. The Tiergartenwith free-ranging animals is great for families with children. The entrance is free of charge. But also the Hanover Zoo is very recommendable. Here you can discover Africa by boat!
