The capital Heraklion is often the first place to go if you haven't booked a package holiday. You can stay in the city for one or two nights. There are many restaurants and hip bars.
2 hours away is the port city Chania. The city is much more atmospheric than Heraklion and especially romantic at sunset. From Chania, you can easily get to Balos Beach. The Caribbean beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in Crete.
We also recommend a hike in the Samaria Gorge. On the 16km hiking trail - which takes about 5 hours to walk - you will see an impressive natural landscape. Be at the end of the gorge by the sea in time to catch the boat and bus back to the car park.
