Trier, the oldest city in Germany. Founded more than 2000 years ago, Trier was even once the capital of the Roman Empire. The city is famous for Porta Nigra, Roman bathhouses and for its location along the Moselle River.

Trier, Germany’s oldest city, offers a unique blend of Roman history, cultural landmarks, and relaxed local flair. Walking through the old town, you quickly feel that this is no ordinary city – it’s a place where ancient times meet modern life.

We begin our journey at Porta Nigra, the most iconic landmark of Trier. This massive Roman gate has stood here for nearly 2,000 years and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986. Climb the stone steps to the top, and you’ll be rewarded with a panoramic view across Trier – a perfect way to take in the city from above. From here, it’s just a short stroll to the Main Market Square, the vibrant heart of the old town, filled with cafés, street musicians, and local charm.

Nearby stands the Trier Cathedral, Germany’s oldest church. Its architecture spans nearly every era since Roman times – from ancient foundations to Romanesque arches and Gothic towers. One of the cathedral’s most sacred treasures is the Holy Robe, said to be the garment worn by Jesus. Whether you're spiritual or not, the atmosphere here is powerful.

Next, we pass the elegant Electoral Palace, one of the most beautiful Rococo buildings in the country. Just behind it, we explore the ruins of the Imperial Baths, once part of a vast Roman bathing complex. Walking through the underground tunnels is like stepping straight into the past.

A short trip outside the city takes us to the Petrisberg, a peaceful hilltop with sweeping views over Trier, the Moselle River, and the surrounding vineyards. It’s especially magical at sunset – golden light, grapevines, and the calm rhythm of the countryside.

If you have more than a day to spend in Trier, we highly recommend a trip into the Moselle region. Whether you're hiking, biking, playing mini golf, or just enjoying a local meal with a glass of Riesling, this is where you truly feel the slower pace of life. It’s the perfect balance of nature, culture, and delicious regional food. Trier surprised us in the best way – full of history, beauty, and those quiet, memorable moments in between.
