Places of interest

In summer quite a lot of tourists come to Iceland. We therefore recommend you to go in May or September. You can see the northern lights best from September to March. But then the road conditions are much worse due to the weather conditions.

Reykjavik is the northernmost capital of the world. To get a first impression of Iceland, it is best to start your tour here - in the small metropolis of the north.

Arbaejarsafn is an authentic open air museum. At the beginning it looks a bit unspectacular, but it is worth a visit.

The Golden Circle is our first highlight outside of Reykjavik: First we are in DingvellirNational Park. The mystical landscape is simply amazing! All the time steam clouds are rising everywhere.

The Strokkur is the most active geyser in Iceland. The water comes out of the ground every five to ten minutes and is up to 100 degrees Celsius hot.

The third destination in the Golden Circle is probably the most famous waterfall in Iceland: Gullfoss - the golden waterfall.

In one week we drove along the 1,300-kilometer-long ring road - counterclockwise, because most of the sights are in the south and we wanted to see them right at the beginning. On the route you will experience many highlights, like abandoned Icelandic horses and many more great waterfalls.

A highlight of our trip is at Vík í Mýrdal, namely an airplane that crashed here more than 40 years ago. „Solheimasandur Plane Wreck“ is what you have to google.

Iceland is an island of fire and ice. Eleven percent of the country's surface is glacier. You have an impressive view at Vatnajökull. A few hours drive later you can stay in Egilsstadir in a lodging far away from civilization.

In the harsh north of Iceland you will find the active sulphur fields, for example at Hverarönd directly on the ring road. Hverfjall is a former volcano near Myvatn, which you can climb.

Weather in Iceland

Ein isländisches Sprichwort sagt: Gefällt dir das Wetter nicht, dann warte einfach 15 Minuten – und dann kann es schlagartig anders aussehen. Das haben wir so oft auf Island erlebt 😉

Be sure to download the app of the Icelandic weather service. It shows you the local weather and a forecast. In case of storm warnings there is a message directly on your mobile phone.

Rental car

We recommend to get a rental car directly at the airport. The best thing is to book online with a reputable provider. Attention: A car with four-wheel drive is recommended if you also want to drive off-road. Many roads outside the ring road are unpaved, and the weather conditions are easily underestimated. In some parts of Iceland, for example, there is snow all year round.

Iceland has always been a dream for us. The nature here is so vast and untouched. But what surprised us the most: You really have good Internet connection everywhere!
