We explore Fira, stroll through the narrow streets of Firostefani and Imerovigli, and hike along the caldera to Oia. The three- to four-hour hike rewards us with spectacular sea views. The island is especially beautiful at sunset – although we share this moment with plenty of other travellers.
Away from the best-known spots, we discover a quieter side of Santorini. Pyrgos charms us with its winding streets and panoramic views, while Akrotiri offers fascinating insights into the island’s history. Wine-making is also deeply rooted in local tradition: the unique growing conditions and the distinctive Assyrtiko grape variety make Santorini an interesting destination for wine lovers.
And then there are the beaches. Black sand at Perissa and Perivolos, unusual rock formations at Vlichada Beach, and the red cliffs of Red Beach offer plenty of variety. From the water, we experience the volcanic coastline from a completely different perspective – before ending the day with sea views and a hot tub.
Santorini can be touristy, expensive, and crowded at its most popular spots. Nevertheless, its unique landscapes, whitewashed villages, and extraordinary beaches make it a truly special destination.
