San Juan: Colonial Charm Meets Caribbean Cool
Our trip begins in San Juan, the vibrant capital of Puerto Rico. The heart of the city – Old San Juan – feels like stepping back in time. Think pastel-colored buildings, cobblestone streets, balconies filled with flowers, and a warm breeze coming in from the sea.
Two iconic landmarks stand guard over the old town: Castillo San Felipe del Morro and Castillo San Cristóbal. These massive 16th-century fortresses are part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site – and their sweeping ocean views are as impressive as their pirate-era history.
But San Juan isn’t just history. It’s also nightlife, live salsa, street art, beach bars, and a vibe that’s impossible to resist.
Into the Rainforest: El Yunque National Forest
Leaving the city behind, we head into the lush green heart of Puerto Rico – El Yunque National Forest. It’s the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest system, and it feels like stepping into a different world.
The sound of rushing waterfalls, like La Mina Falls, echoes through the trees, and if you’re lucky, you might spot colorful parrots flying overhead. The hiking trails are well-marked, and the views from the higher points are simply unforgettable.
If you’re craving nature, fresh air, and a change of pace – El Yunque delivers.
Magic After Dark: Bioluminescent Bays
One of the most surreal experiences you can have in Puerto Rico happens after sunset: a night-time kayak tour in a bioluminescent bay.
We explored Mosquito Bay on Vieques, which is considered the brightest in the world. As your paddle moves through the water, it lights up with glowing plankton – a magical, glowing blue that feels like something out of a sci-fi movie.
Other great options include Laguna Grande in Fajardo or La Parguera in the southwest. Each one offers a different experience, but they all have one thing in common: pure wonder.
Beaches for Every Mood: From Condado to Culebra
Want a lively vibe with bars, music, and water sports? Head to Condado Beach in San Juan – just minutes from the city center.
Dreaming of powdery white sand, crystal-clear water, and almost no people? Then Flamenco Beach on the island of Culebra is calling your name. Often ranked among the most beautiful beaches in the world, it’s worth the short flight or ferry ride from the main island.
Taste of Puerto Rico: Comida Criolla
Puerto Rico’s food is just as rich as its culture. Known as Comida Criolla, the local cuisine is a flavorful fusion of Spanish, African, and Taíno (indigenous) traditions.
Our favorite dish? Definitely Mofongo – mashed green plantains seasoned with garlic and often filled with meat, seafood, or vegetables. Add a side of arroz con habichuelas (rice and beans), and you’ve got the perfect island meal.
Don’t leave without trying tostones, lechón (roast pork), and a piña colada – which, fun fact, was invented in Puerto Rico!
