Gothenburg. The beautiful harbour city is Sweden's second largest city after Stockholm. Delicious cinnamon buns, exciting tours, lots of nature. We show you: Gothenburg in 5 minutes.
Our journey through Sweden begins in the charming district of Haga, the historic heart of Gothenburg. This area is full of character, with cobbled, mostly car-free streets and beautifully preserved wooden houses that date back to the 19th century. It feels authentic, peaceful, and refreshingly non-touristy. And there's something in the air—the irresistible scent of freshly baked cinnamon buns. A fika stop is a must here, and yes, we try the legendary kanelbullar. (Tip: Go for the biggest one you can find – sharing is optional!)
But Gothenburg isn’t just about cafés and cozy charm. The city also has a rich history. A short walk uphill brings us to Skansen Kronan, a 17th-century fortress perched above the rooftops. From here, we get a panoramic view of Gothenburg – ideal for photographers or simply soaking in the cityscape. Equally historical are the Saluhallen in the city center – a beautiful indoor market hall where you can sample local delicacies, from cheeses and seafood to Swedish specialties you may not have heard of before.
Looking beyond the city limits, Gothenburg’s archipelago offers a world of peaceful fishing villages and rugged coastlines. The ferry ride out to the islands is quick and easy – perfect for a day trip. We wander through tiny harbor towns, enjoy the salty sea breeze, and take in the untouched Scandinavian landscapes. These islands are car-free too, making every step feel even more tranquil.
And then comes our highlight: just under two hours outside the city, we arrive at a remote tiny house deep in the forest. Nestled among tall pine trees, it's the perfect place to disconnect and unwind. For two nights, we trade city noise for birdsong and rustling leaves. Evenings are spent around a campfire, with wine, stories, and a sky full of stars. It’s the kind of moment that reminds us why we travel in the first place.
Gothenburg surprised us with its mix of relaxed city life, stunning nature, and unforgettable stays in the wild. If you're looking for a Swedish escape that goes beyond the usual routes – this might just be your perfect next adventure.
